ADAMS COUNTY
During the Wisconsin Glaciation, the Green Bay Lobe covered the eastern one-third of Adams County. Johnstown Moraine marks this glaciation, with a vast outwash plain to the west. The remainder of the county was a giant lake in front of the ice referred to by geologists as Glacial Lake Wisconsin. A number of islands existed in this extinct lake and are now scenic, sandstone buttes. Roche-A-Cri, Ship Rock, Spring Bluff, Quincy Bluff and Rattlesnake Mound are examples of these castelated (castle-like) buttes. Glacial Lake Wisconsin drained catastrophically when the Green Bay Lobe melted back from the Baraboo Hills. Force from this draining dramatically carved the sandstone at the Wisconsin Dells.
