First Day Hike – Washington/Oz Co Chapter
January 1 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
First Day Hike
Pike Lake Segment
Please join us on New Year’s Day for a hike on the Ice Age Trail and other state park trails in the Kettle Moraine State Forest’s Pike Lake Unit. This hike is being held in conjunction with the Friends of Pike Lake. Additionally, the park staff will have a social bonfire going at the amphitheater so you can warm up after the hike and they will answer any questions you may have about things seen while out on the trail.
LOCATION: The hike will start from the amphitheater near the beach parking lot at the Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Hartford. A 2024 Wisconsin state park sticker is required for this event. 2024 stickers are on sale now and it is recommended you get one in advance to avoid delays when entering the park. Click here for driving directions. Click here for a park map. Watch for yellow “Ice Age Trail Event” signs.
HIKE DESCRIPTION: The hike routes will be different this year due to logging related trail closures. The primary hike of approximately 2 miles will head north from the amphitheater on the orange trail. It will then cut over to the bike trail near the park office, taking the bike trail west before finally heading south along the lakeshore. A shorter hike of about 1 mile will also be offered, which will use the red trail and Ice Age Trail south of the amphitheater. Finally, park staff will lead a 0.5 mile hike (great for small children) on the accessible trail loop near the lake.
WHAT TO BRING:Wear comfortable hiking boots and dress appropriately for the weather. Bring water and your camera.
HIKE LEADERS: Steve & Shana Stangler, Sue Munger, Jeremy Vechinski
