Dane County Oak Savanna Restoration -Prairie Moraine

October 3 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Over the past several years, in the absence of fire, the central ravine area of the woods at Prairie Moraine has gotten filled up with new brushy growth, fallen trees,  and other unwanted debris.  This Saturday we’ll begin our Fall and Winter campaign to cut and pile a lot of this and prepare it for winter burning. This will help open up the central woods so that we can get a good prescribed burn there next spring.
Your help is needed for a variety of tasks – brush cutters (at least two), chainsaws (several) and hand work to cut and pile material in brush piles.
Meet this Saturday October 3rd, at 0900 at the Main parking lot (not the smaller Ice Age Trail lot) at Prairie Moraine.  We’ll gather, sign in, and pass out tools before hiking a short way across the dog park to cross the fence to get to the central ravine area.
Dress appropriately for the weather (a chilly start to a beautiful fall day), and wear gloves appropriate for brush work.  Hearing protection would be a good idea too!  Bring water and a lunch if you plan to stay into the afternoon.  We won’t be sharing food due to Covid.

Please note that all Ice Age Trail volunteers will be covered under the National Park Service Volunteers-in-Parks program protections only if they fill out and sign a new Volunteer Agreement form.  See the message from IATA Executive Director, Mike Wollmer, below explaining this new procedure with links to several documents to read and the filled Volunteer Agreement form to be submitted to the Park Service electronically.  If you have not already done so, please fill out and submit the form to Dan Watson at the Park Service before participating in our workdays.

Thanks for your help and see you there!
