Dane County Chapter – Brush Pile Burning

December 31, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 2:30 pm

ddeWe have a narrow weather window in which to burn brush piles.  Some 1-3″ of snow is forecast for tonight.  Can you join Tom Wise and me tomorrow, to burn as many piles as possible on Dane county’s Ice Age Reserve Wildlife Area?  (This is the new name for the county property where we built Ice Age Trail last summer, between Timber Lane and Old Sauk Pass Rd.)

When: Tuesday, December 31; meet at 9:00 AM.  We will work into the mid-late afternoon.  If you have to leave sooner, that’s OK.  We welcome your help for as long as you can stay.

Where: Meet in the parking lot on Old Sauk Pass Rd.  This is the new parking lot adjacent to Upper Wilkie Gorge.  We will hand out tools and walk south to the woods in the southwest corner of the wildlife area.  There are 30+ brush piles ready to be burned there.  There are also many buckthorn stumps in need of cutting and herbicide treatment.

Sawyers: If you have current safety training, please bring your saw and PPE.  As mentioned above, there are many stumps in need of cutting.

edededededOther gear to bring: If you have an ignition device for lighting brush piles such as a drip torch, propane torch or other device, please bring it.  Fire rakes: I can provide up to 9 fire rakes from the chapter cache; if you have a rake, please bring it.

If you like the warmth of a fire, you should be wearing wool or cotton as an outer layer. Fleece and synthetics will melt as a spark hit them. A sweatshirt on top of these will provide good protection.

FYI: There is a scheduled work day coming up on Saturday, Jan. 4 to work in the same area.  Depending upon snow or lack of, we will burn brush piles and/or clear brush on that day as well.

Thank you!  If you don’t have big plans tomorrow, come out and make some fire with us.  Please tell me if you can come, so I can plan for an adequate amount of hand tools.

If you plan to stay all day, please bring drinking water and some lunch.

Feel free to come if you can stay only part of the day. Please RSVP so I have enough tools with me.
