Dane County Chapter – Trail Corridor Preparation for new IAT Segment
February 22 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Join us as we clear the planned trail corridor for a new piece of Ice Age Trail that will be constructed this season. We will be cutting brush and trees with hand tools, treating stumps and making/removing brush piles to allow trail construction through a key DNR property that provides the western exit from the Valley View area out to Timber Lane. As time permits, we may expand the width of previous honeysuckle removal efforts to extend further up a relatively steep hillside. This type of trail corridor work also helps native wildflower species thrive and creates a beneficial habitat for wildlife including birds, bees, and butterflies.
If you are a certified sawyer (chainsaw) and own personal protective equipment (PPE), please bring both. If you’re not certified to operate a chainsaw, but own PPE, you may bring it so you can work in tandem with a certified sawyer.
We will provide all other needed tools. We will also provide some food to share for lunch, including brats to cook on the fire.
Please wear sturdy warm water-resistant footwear, bring work gloves and wear layers of work clothing. Wear synthetics or fleece only as inner layers, with wool or cotton outer layers, because fleece and synthetics will melt as a sparks from the burn piles hit them. An old sweatshirt as your outer layer is an example of good protection.
If you plan to stay into the afternoon, please bring drinking water and some lunch.
Feel free to come even if you stay only part of the day. It is preferable that you RSVP so that we bring enough tools.
Location: The property is immediately north of 3478 Timber Lane in the Town of Middleton. Please be sure to park with all four wheels entirely off of the pavement along Timber Lane.
