The Hike
The trail crosses Bourbon Road near the Cross Plains fire station and heads south between buildings into the John I. Hillenbrand Glacial Valley Conservancy. The trail climbs sharply and meanders southward along the top of a wooded ridge, overlapping and crossing part of the Conservancy Trail. After passing behind a dairy farm, the segment exits the forest and begins its decent, down a steep hill to CTH-P. Crossing CTH-P, the trail continues on new trail opened in AugustĀ 2021 east on an easement through a farm and then south to Mammoth’s Back, where it travels on the east side to a parking lot on Stagecoach Road. There is a white-blazed loop trail around Mammoth’s Back.
Event Details
About 4 mile hike on the southern portion of the Cross Plains Segment. Trail has a couple steeper slopes. On top of bluff are some nice woods and remnant prairies. Then we’ll descend the bluff, cross Hwy P and take the trail opened in August 2021 out to the Mammoth’s Back. On the return, we’ll have a couple options to not return exactly the same way to mix things up a bit. Dogs on leash allowed. No Facilities.
Location
Hikers will meet on Bourbon Road in Cross Plains near the fire station.
