Dane County Chapter – Prairie Planting
January 11 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Notice: This activity has changed as seeds weren’t available before December.
Dane County Parks spends time each fall harvesting seeds from many of the chapter prairies. In the fall, we are repaid with fresh seeds for expanding prairies in new areas. Join us to scatter seeds and start the countdown for three years to see them amaze us with their color.
We will plant more than 70 species of tall grass prairie grasses and forbs in a new section of the Liebetrau Prairie along the Ice Age Trail. We have 5 acres to plant that will connect a section of prairie we planted more than a decade ago with one we planted two years ago. This planting will increase the prairie we have planted here on former cropland over the past 17 years to more than 60 acres. Help us continue our work of restoring prairie along the Ice Age Trail.
Bring plenty of water and food for yourself, work gloves, and dress in layers appropriate for the weather. You should wear warm clothing, but not fuzzy outerwear that the seeds could stick to. I will bring some food and drink to share.
We don’t yet have an address for the new parking lot. You will find it some 0.1 miles south of Liebetrau Road (0.6 miles south of Spring Valley Road) and 1.0 miles from Table Bluff Road at Hwy KP.
