Dane County Chapter – Land Stewardship: Destroy Re-sprouting Invasive Shrubs, Lodi Marsh
June 6 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
The prescribed burns that we and WDNR did in April at several areas along the Ice Age Trail in Dane County “top killed” large numbers of honeysuckle and buckthorn in the prairies and woodlands. In the next several weeks before we begin removing the herbaceous weeds from our prairies, we will herbicide those invasive shrubs that are resprouting from their roots in several of our preserves. We will begin this weekend — June 5 and 6th — with a Lodi Marsh State Wildlife Area weekend — two opportunities in one weekend to enjoy several of our rescued prairie remnants and one of our major woodland restoration areas. The destruction of the pesky invasive shrubs accomplished by productive prescribed burns followed by herbiciding of resprouts is quite dramatic and a major step toward re-establishing healthy ecosystems in these sites.
There are opportunities on both days to help herbicide resprouting shrubs and to hand-pull any remaining invasive weeds too far into seed to herbicide.
Please let me know if you can help us with any of these activities this Saturday and/or Sunday. No prior experience is required to do this work, but I need to know who can help so that we have enough backpack sprayers and buckets to use.
I will send confirmations and details of when and where to meet to those of you who can help for each day.
Thanks for your help and Happy Spring/almost Summer!
Please RSVP to confirm that you can help, to make sure we have enough equipment. Gary Werner 608-249-2421 home
