Dane County – Clear Fire Breaks, Old Sauk Pass
March 14 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Have you ever walked a trail and seen a mown path crossing it with no markings? This is likely a fire break, used for areas which are regularly burned.
We will shift from our winter work of removing invasive buckthorn, honeysuckle, and other shrubs and trees in the oak savannas and woodlands in our preserves to preparing firebreaks for several of the places we intend to burn along the Ice Age Trail this spring. This work involves clearing the breaks of tree limbs and shrubs and raking or blowing leaves from the breaks. We will also clear around trees we want to keep from getting burned.
We will start at the Cross Plains Ice Age Reserve area north of Old Sauk Pass (across from the old farmstead) and proceed to several other sites along the Ice Age Trail (Andersen/Hickory Hill, Holmes, Liebetrau within the Cross Plains and Table Bluff segments). We will likely continue this process on Sunday.
I will have herbicide, loppers, and hand saws. Please bring a chain saw and protective gear if you have them.
Bring plenty of water and food for yourself, work gloves, and dress in layers appropriate for the weather. I will bring some food and drink to share.
MEET: at the entrance to the CPIANSR on the north side of Old Sauk Pass in the Town of Cross Plains.
Please let know if you can help on Saturday and/or on Sunday.
