Land Stewardship: Cut Resprouts on Mammoth’s Back – Dane County Chapter
July 20 @ 8:30 am - 12:30 pm
One of the areas cleared last year has buckthorn, sumac, and honeysuckle creeping back in as resprouts. Using loppers and nippers, we will be cutting and treating these and stacking them in a brush pile. Bring your own nippers if you have them.
The work area is on a north-facing goat prairie. Prepare for steep hillsides to climb with tools. We will walk in about half a mile before we begin our climb up, then west before we reach the work area. To work, we will take a few steps down the goat prairie, turn and treat, then take a few more steps downhill.
This is likely to be an ongoing activity on Tuesdays, weather permitting. Plan on working in full sun with potential for a good breeze.
A gravel driveway and culvert mark the spot of an eventual parking lot. It’s best to park on the edge of the road for now, watching for bikers.
We may knock off early or look for shady areas to work as weather dictates. Sun block recommended; I’ll bring herbicide.
