First Day Hike – Washington/Oz Co Chapter

January 1, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

First Day Hike

Pike Lake Segment

Please join us on New Year’s Day for a hike on the Ice Age Trail and other state park trails in the Kettle Moraine State Forest’s Pike Lake Unit.  This hike is being held in conjunction with the Friends of Pike Lake.  Additionally, the park naturalist will be present to answer any questions you may have about things seen while out on the trail.  Following the hike, the Friends group plans to have a fire going at the amphitheater.

Most of the Ice Age Trail in the Kettle Moraine State Forest’s Pike Lake Unit follows the edge of a glacial ridge through heavily forested maple and beach woods. Be sure to check out the Powder Hill spur trail that climbs 0.2 miles to the top of 1,350-foot Powder Hill, one of the larger kames in the area. A lookout tower on top offers spectacular 360-degree views. Pike Lake is a spring-fed kettle with a very popular sandy beach swimming area.

LOCATION: The hike will start from the amphitheater near the beach parking lot at the Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest in Hartford.  A 2023 Wisconsin state park sticker is required for this event.  2023 stickers are on sale now and it is recommended you get one in advance to avoid delays when entering the park.  Click here for driving directions. Click here for a park map.  Watch for yellow “Ice Age Trail Event” signs.

HIKE DESCRIPTION: Two hike routes will be offered.  The longer hike of 2.9 miles will follow the orange loop trail along Pike Lake, turn east to climb the glacial ridge, then meet up with the Ice Age Trail and descend back down to the parking lot.  About halfway through the hike participants will have the option to use the green trail as a shortcut, eliminating some climbing and cutting the total distance to about 2 miles.

WHAT TO BRING: Wear comfortable hiking boots and dress appropriately for the weather. Bring water and your camera.

HIKE LEADERS: Steve and Shana Stangler, Lance Henrickson, and Jeremy Vechinski (and we could use a few more volunteers due to the large turnout expected, email the chapter if you are interested)
