Land Stewardship: Savanna Restoration, Holmes Preserve – Dane County Chapter
February 10, 2022 @ 9:00 am - 3:30 pm

Description
Several weeks ago we cleared most of the honeysuckle thicket adjacent to the Ice Age Trail leading to the Millennium Prairie in the Holmes Preserve. Help us finish removing this thicket and reveal the magnificent “mother oak” on the crest of the hill. While you are helping enjoy the warmth of the fires watch for soaring eagles, cranes, and hawks and returning bluebirds in the crisp winter air. No prior experience is required to do this work, but you must let me know you will help so that we have enough tools to use. We will need qualified sawyers with chainsaws and PPE for the workdays. We will also need help with cutting the smaller shrubs with loppers, herbiciding the cut stumps, and burning the slash piles that we made earlier this winter.
What to Bring
You should have long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, gloves, sturdy boots, and whatever water and food you want for the day. While running a brush cutter you also need head and hearing protection. Sunscreen and insect repellent are optional but advised.
RSVP
You must RSVP with the work day organizer (listed below) so we have enough equipment and we can make sure all volunteers for the day have up-to-date information about meeting location.
Volunteer Service Agreement
If you’re joining us for the first time at an event, please complete the fillable Volunteer Services Agreement Form and email it (along with any questions) to Dan Watson, (Daniel_Watson@nps.gov). You should also complete the form if you don’t have a Volunteer Services Agreement Form on file, or completed one prior to April 2020.
Additional information for first-time volunteers.
