7:00 – 7:45 The Future of Badger: Birds, Bats & Butterflies

The past twenty years have brought unimaginable changes to the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant.  The dedicated and concerted efforts of a group of visionary citizens changed the future of the property, forever.  1998: 1,400 buildings, 110 miles of roads, dozens of miles of rail lines constitute the 7,400-acre Badger Plant. 2018: all buildings and most roads and rail lines are gone, and three conservation-minded property owners are engaged in the largest grassland restoration effort in the the state.  This amazing transition was fueled by a singular vision to keep the property “green,” to heal past wounds and to make the property whole again, widely available for public recreational use while providing vital habitat to rare grassland wildlife, especially birds and pollinators.

Come hear the story of the evolution of the citizen’s group that made this transitiion possible, and learn about this fascinating landscape where birds, bats and butterflies will have a stake in its future.
