Our Commitment to Justice and Equality

Justice comes in the form of dedicated actions that generate meaningful change.

Outdoor spaces are everyone’s right to enjoy without being subjected to danger, suspicion, and violence. Events in our nation have exposed a challenge to our mission that goes well beyond the Trail.

Examples of appalling actions include:

  • A surge in hate crimes against Asian-Americans in our country, escalating into the senseless shootings and deaths of eight people in Atlanta, Georgia, six of Asian descent, on Tuesday, March 16, 2021.
  • The violence against Black Americans, made widely apparent by the murder of George Floyd on May 25, 2020, a 46-year-old black man killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, while arrested for allegedly using a counterfeit bill.

The Alliance is wholly committed to making the Ice Age Trail and our community of supporters an inclusive experience for all people.

In 2018, the Alliance adopted a formal policy: Our Statement of Inclusion begins with “Our commitment to celebrating diversity, ensuring inclusion, and working towards equity in all we do.”

We stand firm in our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity. The Ice Age Trail Alliance condemns racist attitudes and behaviors that undermine humanity’s basic tenets and civil rights for people of color.

Outdoor spaces are everyone’s right to enjoy without being subjected to danger, suspicion, and violence.

We will not rest on a simple statement. Though we have taken steps towards diversity, equity and inclusion, we are now, more than ever, rededicated to the effort of addressing all issues related to race, ethnicity, and all people neglected, rejected, or ignored by society.

Justice comes in the form of dedicated actions that generate meaningful change.

We welcome ideas from all.

With peace, hope and in solidarity,
