Land Restoration Specialist

Steve coordinates and manages the Alliance’s Habitat Improvement Program. He executes management plan goals, develops volunteers to assist with conservation efforts, and oversees the prescribed fire program. 

Steve Pence, Land Restoration Specialist, Ice Age Trail Alliance, Ice Age National Scenic TrailSteve joined the Alliance in October 2022 as Land Restoration Specialist. He is responsible for building and maintaining strong, lasting relationships with conservation, recreation, and wildlife partners. Steve assists with grant funding proposals and provides oversight of short-and long-range goals relating to Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices.

Steve grew up in southern Wisconsin, spending time camping, canoeing, hunting and fishing. He attended the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, graduating with a BS degree in Wildlife Ecology: Research and Management. Post-graduation, he worked for the DNR, Fish and Wildlife Service, and private organizations doing habitat restoration work. Steve has been involved with a range of conservation projects, including waterfowl and Peregrine Falcon banding, Bald Eagle nest and rattlesnake surveys, and the Elk reintroduction project in northern Wisconsin.

His introduction to the Alliance came during a habitat restoration project along the John Muir Park Segment supporting the endangered Karner blue butterfly. He was impressed by Alliance staff and volunteers – their excitement and dedication to the mission. His focus will continue building on the Alliance’s successful restoration efforts.
