Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter First Day Hike: Lapham Peak

Bring in the New Year with a fun-filled hike! Come early and enjoy a bonfire, hot chocolate and cookies!

Hikes:

Our chapter has organized three guided loop hikes:

  • Family-Friendly 1 mile hike on a paved path
  • 2 mile wooded path
  • 3.5 mostly wooded path

Details:

Each hike will be guided by knowledgeable leaders who will share information on various points of interest. Dress for the weather. Ice cleats may be helpful.  These hikes are free, although a park sticker or day pass is required for entrance to Lapham Peak. Save time and purchase your sticker early. It can be ordered online here.

Location:

All three hikes will begin and end at the Mike Fort Shelter located near Homestead Hollow in Lapham Peak.

Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter: Lapham Peak Segment Hike

The Hike:

Please join us for a hike on the Lapham Peak Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Winding through woods and prairie, it includes outstanding views from the observation tower.

Details:

This leisurely-paced hike is approximately 4 miles long. Hiking poles are helpful. Bring water and dress for the weather. This hike will only be canceled if weather or conditions are unsafe. All ages and abilities are welcome. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Location:

Meet at the Cushing Memorial Park parking lot. We will leave some vehicles there and carpool to the Tower Parking Lot where we will begin our hike.

Waukesha/Milwaukee Co. Chapter -Tyke Hike at Lapham Peak

The Tyke Hike:

Join us on a Family-friendly stroll along Wisconsin’s own Ice Age National Scenic Trail! This year our Tyke Hikes will focus on Wisconsin-based picture book authors and Ice Age Trail segments in Waukesha County. We will explore a tyke-sized portion of the  Lapham Peak Segment in Waukesha County. Families with children of all ages should attend!

These hikes give kids the opportunity to explore, discover and participate in natural play. They last approximately 1-2 hours and can cover up to 1.5 miles. Tyke Hikes are led by Peter Dargatz, a forest kindergarten teacher and Ice Age Trail volunteer.

Tyke Hike Details:

This hike’s picture book is Sophie’s Squash by Pat Z. Miller. After reading this book, we will hike for approximately 30 minutes at a child-led pace and then return. There will be occasional stops for play and exploration along the way. Hikers should dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes/hiking boots. Bring water.

This year, we will focus on Wisconsin-based picture book authors and Ice Age Trail Segments. Our hike will begin after this month’s featured book, Flip! Float! Fly!  by Joann Early Macken. Families with children of all ages should attend!

These hikes give kids the opportunity to explore, discover and participate in natural play. They last approximately 1-2 hours and can cover up to 1.5 miles. Tyke Hikes are led by Peter Dargatz, a forest kindergarten teacher and Ice Age Trail volunteer.

We will hike for approximately 30 minutes and then return. There will be occasional stops for play and exploration along the way. Hikers should dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes/hiking boots. Most importantly, bring water.

Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter Annual Cookout and Potluck

Summer Cookout & Potluck

Event:

Nothing better than a summer cookout with your fellow Chapter members at a great state park! Come on out to Lapham Peak (rain or shine) and enjoy some good food and time with friends.

Details:

Bring a dish to pass, a lawn chair and your favorite beverage.  Brats provided by the Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter.

Location:

We will meet at the Mike Fort Shelter. Park in the nearby Homestead Hollow lot.

Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter – Holiday Gathering

When:

Saturday, December 9th
Appetizers & beverages begin at 5:00pm, dinner 5:30pm

Where:

Follow Ice Age Trail Event signs to Trecker Lodge at Lapham Peak in the Homestead Hollow area. There is a heated restroom at the parking lot and a lighted pathway that takes you down to the Lodge.

What’s Provided:

Main entrée, cold beer, wine, water, utensils, plates, cups, napkins are provided.  Enjoy hot cider along with a bonfire just outside the Lodge. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available. Dinner will be served indoors with electricity if needed.

What to Bring:

Significant other, an appetizer, side dish or dessert, beverage of choice, outdoor chair and warm clothes, flashlight and plenty of stories to share!

NOTE > All events at Lapham Peak require a State Park Sticker or Day Pass.

Tyke Hike – Lapham Peak – Waukesha/Milwaukee Co. Chapter

The Tyke Hike:

Join us on a Family-friendly stroll along Wisconsin’s own Ice Age National Scenic Trail! We will explore a tyke-sized portion of the prairie portion of the  Lapham Peak Segment in Waukesha County. Families with children of all ages should attend!

These hikes give kids the opportunity to explore, discover and participate in natural play. Most hikes include a picture book story and educational materials as well as certificates for children. In addition, service opportunities may be included. They last approximately 1-2 hours and can cover up to 1.5 miles. Tyke Hikes are led by Peter Dargatz, a forest kindergarten teacher and Ice Age Trail volunteer.

Tyke Hike Details:

We will hike for approximately 45 minutes and then return. There will be occasional stops for play and exploration along the way. Hikers should dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes/hiking boots. Most importantly, bring water.

Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter First Day Hike: Lapham Peak

The Hikes:

Start the New Year off right with our Chapter’s First Day Hike! There are two hikes to choose from:

  • A family-friendly walk leaves from Homestead Hollow and follows the paved Plantation Path for a 1.8-mile loop.
  • A longer hike leaves from the Tower parking lot and will be about 3.5 miles long (but loops by the lot again about halfway through).

Details:

Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes/boots. Trekking poles are recommended. Cleats are recommended if it is icy. There will be no refreshments provided this year, but Delafield and Hartland have many wonderful businesses nearby. A State Park Pass is not required on New Year’s Day.

Location:

The family-friendly walk leaves from Homestead Hollow. The longer hike leaves from the Tower parking lot.
