Twilight Trail Hike – Monches

Great news, hikers! The Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance is bringing back Twilight Trail Hikes; its well-attended, weeknight series of hikes for 2024!  This series of hikes will take place on the last Tuesday of the month, April through September. No need to sign up, just show up!

 

Hike:

This out-and-back hike starts at the Monches Segment’s northern trailhead, where we will enter the Charles Schurz Forest and explore its wooded moraines. We will then descend toward the marshy banks of the Oconomowoc River to the “interesting bridge” and return.

Details:

This hike is approximately 3.25 miles long. The northern end of this segment is hilly and a hiking stick is helpful. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather and bring water and a flashlight/headlamp, if conditions warrant. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed and cleaned up after. Please bring water for your dogs as well.

Location:

The Monches Segment’s northern trailhead is located along the Waukesha-Washington County line in the Town of Merton (Waukesha County) at the intersection of CTH Q (County Line Road) and CTH E (Washington County)/CTH K (Waukesha County). The Monches/Hwy K Parking Lot for this hike is located approx. 0.13 mile north of the this intersection. Look for the IAT event sign as you approach this hike event.

Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter: Lapham Peak Segment Hike

The Hike:

Please join us for a hike on the Lapham Peak Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Winding through woods and prairie, it includes outstanding views from the observation tower.

Details:

This leisurely-paced hike is approximately 4 miles long. Hiking poles are helpful. Bring water and dress for the weather. This hike will only be canceled if weather or conditions are unsafe. All ages and abilities are welcome. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Location:

Meet at the Cushing Memorial Park parking lot. We will leave some vehicles there and carpool to the Tower Parking Lot where we will begin our hike.

Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter: Hartland Walking Club – Loew Lake Segment

The Hike:

Explore the National Ice Age Trail with us! This month we will be hiking the Loew Lake Segment. This segment connects with the Holy Hill Segment to the north and the Monches Segment to the south. Located in Washington County, the Loew Lake Segment of the IAT meanders through a moderately hilly area. Highlights of the segment include a lovely corridor of pine trees, views from hilltops, plenty of glacial geology, and wonderful views of Holy Hill.

Details:

This hike will be approximately 4 miles long. Hiking poles are helpful. Bring water and dress for the weather. We will cancel if weather or conditions are unsafe. These hikes are free. All ages and abilities are welcome. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter: West Bend Segment Hike

The Hike:

Enjoy this Mammoth Challenge Opportunity as we visit the West Bend Trail Community and hike on the West Bend Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. Although this trail is set in the middle of an urban area, the vast majority of this scenic trail runs through mature woodlands, up and over many hummocky hills and through wetlands.

This leisurely-paced hike is approximately 4 miles long. Hiking poles are helpful. Bring water and dress for the weather. This hike will only be canceled if weather or conditions are unsafe. All ages and abilities are welcome. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Location:

Meet at the Culver’s parking lot. We will leave some vehicles there and carpool to the Paradise Dr. Parking Area where we will begin our hike.

The Hike:

Explore the Ice Age National ScenicTrail AND participate in a Mammoth Hike Challenge Opportunity with us! This month we will be hiking three to four miles of the Holy Hill Segment.

Details:

This loop hike will start at the Station Way Rd picnic area. We will hike south on the trail and come back up the road that leads into Holy Hill. Hiking poles are helpful. Bring water. Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter: Eagle Segment Hike

The Hike:

Join us as we hike the Eagle Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail. The Eagle Segment skirts the eastern edge of the Kettle Moraine and the Niagra Escarpment. It meanders along the edge of what was once Glacial Lake Scuppernong. This trail is mild and easy walking characterized by frequent boardwalks through low wetlands, prairies, and thin forests. The Trail passes through the Kettle Moraine Low Prairie and Scuppernong Prairie State Natural Areas. It also belongs to the larger Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Details:

This leisurely-paced hike is approximately 4 miles long. Bring water. Dress for the weather. This hike will only be canceled if weather or conditions are unsafe. All ages and abilities are welcome. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Meet at the Hwy 67 Trailhead parking lot. We will leave some vehicles there and carpool to the small parking area along on Hwy N  near Eagle, WI where we will begin our hike.

Explore the National Ice Age Trail with us! This month we will be hiking the Waterville Segment. This out and back hike will start at Waterville’s southern trailhead and will be 3-4 miles in length. The trail consists of a variety of terrain including multiple boardwalks.

The Hike:

We are hoping the weather cooperates for this hike! For that involves our Discussion Topic/Themes: Weather and Mr. Increase Lapham; father of the National Weather Service…and so much more.

This hike will follow the Ice Age Trail to the Lapham Peak tower from the Evergreen parking lot. The tower is located at the highest point in Waukesha County at 1,235 feet height above mean sea level. From there we will return on the prairie loop and finish the hike back at the parking lot.

Details:

This hike is 3+ miles, with a difficulty rating of medium. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather, bring water and a flashlight/headlamp. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and cleaned up after. Please bring water for your dogs as well.

Location:

We will meet at Lapham Peak’s  Evergreen Shelter parking lot. Look for the IAT event sign as you approach this hike event.

Hike:

Come out to hike and enjoy the rather rare upcoming blue moon event! Discussion topic/themes: the blue moon; Stute Springs  >> “Once in a Blue moon” is a phrase commonly used to describe an incredibly rare event, but what does it mean in astronomical terms? Stute Springs was once the Stute family farm. Located in the Southern Kettle Moraine, the Stute’s settled this 180-acre farm beginning in the 1850’s. We will do a loop trail hiking west on the IAT to CTH Z; follow the IAT to Emma Carlin trailhead; go south on CTH Z to the Stute Springs Trails; follow the Stute Springs Trails east to the Nordic Ski Trail; take the Nordic Ski Trail to the IAT – Stony Ridge Segment; follow the IAT back to the Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit Headquarters’ parking lot.

Details:

This hike is 3+ miles, with a difficulty rating of medium. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather, bring water and a flashlight/headlamp. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and cleaned up after. Please bring water for your dogs as well.

Location:

Enter the KMSF HQ driveway at S91 W39091 STH 59, Eagle, WI, 53119 (on the south side of STH 59) and go over the Wisconsin and Southern RR tracks to get to the parking lot. Look for the IAT event sign as you approach this hike event.

Details:

This will be about a four mile hike through some of the more interesting areas of the Southern Kettle Moraine. There are some moderate hills so be
prepared for a cardio workout. Bring water. Dress for the weather. We will cancel if weather or conditions are unsafe. Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter: Gibraltar Rock Segment Hike

 The Hike:

We will hike ~2 mi along the IAT through the Steenbock Preserve, taking in views of Lake Wisconsin. After ~1 mi on a connecting road, we arrive at the Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area. Rising 1,234 ft above sea level, Gibraltar Rock is a flat-topped butte with 200 foot sheer cliffs offering spectacular panoramic views of the Wisconsin River valley and Lake Wisconsin.

Details:

This leisurely-paced hike is approximately 5.6 miles long (with shorter options). We will have lunch after hiking 1.3 mi up to the top of Gibraltar Rock. Bring water and lunch. Dress for the weather. Hiking poles will be helpful. This hike will only be canceled if weather or conditions are unsafe. All ages and abilities are welcome. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Location:

We will meet at the Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area parking lot. We will leave some vehicles there and carpool to the Merrimac Ferry Wayside on Hwy 113.

Waukesha/Milwaukee Chapter: Cedar Lakes Segment Hike

Cedar  The Hike:

We will hike the Cedar Lakes Segment out and back. This segment contains some of the finest kettle moraine topography in Wisconsin. A mix of forest, wetlands and farm fields, the trail winds through the second largest cluster of Kames in the state. Kames are steep hills made of glacial till composed of gravel, sand, and rock.

Details:

This leisurely-paced out and back hike is approximately 5.5 miles long. We may shorten it to 3.5 miles by returning via the Kame Loop Trail. Bring water. Dress for the weather. We will only cancel if weather or conditions are unsafe. All ages and abilities are welcome. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We will meet at the Cedar Lakes Trail Access on Hwy NN near Slinger.

Explore the National Ice Age Trail with us! This month we will be hiking the Stony Ridge Segment near Eagle. This segment connects directly to the Blue Spring Lake Segment to the west and to the Eagle Segment to the northeast. Many enjoy it’s wide and gentle footpath and it is a particularly popular and well-traveled segment as the state forest headquarters and museum is located at it’s center.

The State Forest Headquarters is an interesting stop along the IAT. It has a museum dedicated to wildlife, geology, and local economic history. The display cases feature a number of artifacts found along the Ice Age Trail.  A gift shop as well as flush toilets and a water bottle refill station are available there.

We will hike from Hwy N through the Scuppernong Prairie on the bed of ancient Lake Scuppernong, which includes a grassy savanna. We will continue along a wooded esker as we return to the State Forest Headquarters.

The State Forest Headquarters is an interesting stop along the IAT. It has a museum dedicated to wildlife, geology, and local economic history. The display cases feature a number of artifacts found along the Ice Age Trail.  A gift shop, flush toilets and a water bottle refill station are available there.

This leisurely-paced hike is 4 miles long. Bring water. Dress for the weather as our hikes are held in all types of weather. We will only cancel if weather or conditions are unsafe. All ages and abilities are welcome. Ages 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Location:

Meet at the Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit Headquarters parking lot off of HWY 59. We will leave some vehicles there and carpool to the roadside parking area on Hwy N.

Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter – First Day Hike

Bring in the New Year with a fun-filled hike! Come early and enjoy a bonfire, hot chocolate and cookies!

Hikes:

Our chapter has organized three guided loop hikes:

  • Family-Friendly 1 mile hike on a paved path
  • 2 mile wooded path
  • 3.5 mostly wooded path

Details:

Each hike will be guided by knowledgeable leaders who will share information on various points of interest. Dress for the weather. Ice cleats may be helpful.  These hikes are free, although a park sticker or day pass is required for entrance to Lapham Peak. Save time and purchase your sticker early. It can be ordered online here.

Location:

All three hikes will begin and end at the Mike Fort Shelter located near Homestead Hollow in Lapham Peak.

The Hartland Walking Club was created by local Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter volunteers on the Village of Hartland Ice Age Trail Community Committee.

 

 

 

Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter: Wee Walkers Hike – Hartbrook Park

Join Hartland Walking Club’s “Wee Walkers” as we explore the beautiful Hartland Segment of the Ice Age Trail as it winds through Hartbrook Park.

Meet at the Hartbrook Park playground. We will complete a stroller-friendly out and back hike, exploring and enjoying our surroundings as we walk. Hikes last 1-2 hours. All ages are welcome (kids must be accompanied by an adult).

Walks are led by 5-year-old Simon, 3-year-old Ophelia, 10-month-old Rhea, and their mom, Christina, an Ice Age Trail volunteer (and kid at heart). Please dress for the weather. If weather conditions are unsafe we will cancel.

How to find us: We’ll be by the pavilion.
